Summer officially started last week, but it will be time to go back to school before you know it.

In fact, those students heading off to college may have to start school before their former high school colleagues. To help them prepare for one of the biggest changes in their lives, the Peachtree City Recreation Department is sponsoring a three-hour seminar taught by college professor Elly Warga.

"Surviving your first term in college" will be taught Saturday, July 14 at the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center from 1-4 p.m. Topics discussed will include: the distinction between high school and college, study skills, note taking strategies and test-taking strategies, time management, stress management, campus resources, student life issues, roommate situations and learning to deal with a variety of instructors.

The seminar involves a lot of group work paired sharing. Sometimes the students are asked to go to the front of the room. They are given problematic situations and are asked to solve those situations. Students are asked to bring paper and pen to the class to take notes.

"A student's first term in college can be the one that makes or breaks his or her college experience," said Warga. "Getting off to a good start is the best bet for succeeding in college and knowing how to deal with college life can make it a lot easier."

Warga teaches a college success strategies course at DeVry Institute of Technology and a team building course at Shorter College. It was through those classes that she decided to open these lessons up to high school seniors, so that they would have a head start when entering college the next year. She began teaching seminars around the state and has gained prominence. She has appeared as a guest on Peachtree Morning, WSB Radio and the Steve and Vikki Morning Show on Star 94.

"I like to talk about the stuff in college that most of us learned after the fact," Warga said. "It's the kind of stuff we don't deal with until after we're in the experience. We learn about it after we're there."

Class size is limited so call the Peachtree City Recreation Department at 770-631-2542 or Elly Warga at 770-663-4804 to reserve your space. The fee for the seminar is $100 and includes a 15-page handbook.
