Swingin' Medallions swing into town By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
Greenwood, S.C., is the home of Lander University and in the mid-to-late '60s it was the home of The Swingin' Medallions. The group plays what has been classified as beach music, frat rock, rhythm and blues and shaggin' music. They will bring their eclectic sound to the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater this Saturday at 8 p.m. The Swingin' Medallions have always been a popular act and are still considered by many to be the "party band of the South," but they were their most popular in 1966 when they recorded "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)." The song, which is still a party classic today, was a million seller and paved the way for two other top 40 hits "She Drives Me Out of My Mind" and "Hey, Hey Baby." The members of the group have changed over the past 30-plus years, but one original member, John McElrath, remains. McElrath was the one who convinced the group to record "Double Shot" and now he tours with his two sons, Shawn and Shane, as well as guitarist Wayne Free, drummer Robby Cox, Chris Crowe on baritone sax, Richard Loper on trumpet, Ashby Stokes on guitar and Josh Campbell on bass. The Swingin' Medallions will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 30. Tickets are $15 and all seats are general admission. The tables that are usually near the stage at the amphitheater will be removed so that there will be more room for dancing. For tickets call 770-631-0630. The group is currently working on a live album and video and may be taping at the concert. They ask that you be on your best, or worst, behavior.
