Peachtree City residents that have grown accustomed to the good customer service an variety of products at Harris Teeter are probably in mourning today.

Yesterday, the Kroger Company announced its purchasing 15 Harris Teeter supermarkets located in metro Atlanta area and Athens.

The stores will become part of Kroger's Atlanta division, which currently has 107 stores.

"These stores will provide new growth opportunities for Kroger as we expand our business in metro Atlanta," said Bruce Lucia, president of Kroger's Atlanta division.

Kroger expects the deal to close within the next 30 days and has not announced if any of the newly-acquired Harris Teeter locations would be closed.

The company currently has two stores already in Peachtree City.

Harris Teeter entered the Atlanta market in 1993 and has been struggling to keep up with the rapid expansion of Kroger and Publix throughout the region.

Harris Teeter is also closing stores in South Carolina and focusing more on its home base in North Carolina and Tennessee.
