Political newcomer Fred Wellman has announced he will seek the mayor's post in Peachtree City.

Wellman said in a statement Tuesday that his primary goal will be "to bring a new tone of civility and respect to the political arena in Peachtree City."

Wellman and his supporters have also pledged not to accept any donations over $100 with the goal of creating diverse political support with "no vested interests."

Wellman, who lives in the Rockspray subdivision, joins Planterra Ridge resident Steve Brown as the only two announced candidates for mayor.

Wellman said he hopes to use the city's website, town hall meetings and public forums to inform citizens about how city government works. He also wants to assist the development of small businesses and "lead Peachtree City through the difficult challenges associated with the coming transition from a fast-growing development to a stable residential city."

Wellman was one of the 15 candidates who applied to fill the post of departing councilman Robert Brooks in February. Council tabbed Steve Rapson to replace Brooks, but Wellman was one of the five finalists interviewed by council.

A 1987 graduate of West Point Academy who served in the U.S. Army, Wellman moved his family to Peachtree City in 1998 when he was assigned to Fort McPherson.

Last year he left active duty so he and his family could remain in Peachtree City. He remains a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves. Currently, Wellman is a project manager with PMSI-Project Mentors in north Atlanta.

Wellman and his wife, Crystal, have four children. They attend Peachtree City United Methodist Church.

He is serving on a subcommittee helping prepare the city's bond referendum proposal for a possible community center.
