Finalists selected for Governor's Honors program

While most Fayette County students will be enjoying time away from school this summer, some students will continue their learning experiences as they participate in the 2001 Georgia Governor's Honors program.

Governor's Honors is a six-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

Eighteen students have been selected to attend the program from Fayette County public schools.

The first step to being selected as a Governor's Honors candidate requires a nomination from the student's teacher in a particular instructional area supported by the program. Major instructional areas are English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, social studies, visual art, theater, music, dance, design, technology and executive management.

Students must be rising juniors or seniors to be eligible. Local nominees are sent to a statewide screening where interviews and auditions, where pertinent, are conducted to select the finalists.

"Governor's Honors is a major program and is very competitive. It is truly an honor for those students who are selected as finalists," says Cathy Geis, social studies and physical education coordinator for Fayette County schools.

The program is conducted every year on the campus of Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga. This year's program will take place June 17-July 28.
