Movies
By MICHAEL BOYLAN Opening Friday Evolution Think Ghostbusters with aliens and no SNL alums. David Duchovny, Julianne Moore and Orlando Jones star in this film about people finding aliens that evolve at an enormous rate. They try to save the day while the aliens try to destroy it. Looks like fun. Rated PG-13. Swordfish John Travolta and Halle Berry star in this action packed film about hackers and government money. I hope it is good. For my money, Travolta was never better than when he was in Face/Off, which was one of the best action films of the last 10 years. Rated R. Now Playing A Knight's Tale This is a very enjoyable movie. It has action, comedy, drama and Geoffery Chaucer naked. The film is effective in its combination of modern sports themes and the Medieval code of honor. The all-classic-rock sound track is also great and does not diminish the film in the least. Enjoy. Rated PG-13. Along Came A Spider No, this has nothing to do with muffets or tuffets. Morgan Freeman reprises his role from the thriller Kiss The Girls and is out to catch a killer. Do you like this type of movie? Guess we know where you will be this weekend. Rated R. Angel Eyes Jennifer Lopez plays a cop in Chicago who meets a mystery man and falls in love. This looks very Sixth Sense-ish and got decent reviews. Rated R. Crocodile Dundee In Los Angeles Why couldn't they have made a movie with Steve, The Crocodile Hunter. He's far more entertaining and he's the Australian America loves right now. Paul Hogan lost me with that Almost An Angel movie and those Subaru ads. Rated PG. Driven This looks like Rocky on wheels. The question is: Is this Rocky I on wheels or Rocky V? The racing sequences look incredible and Stallone's last few movies haven't been as bad as Schwarzenegger's last few movies. I hope this is good. Rated PG-13. Moulin Rouge Baz Luhrmann, the director of Romeo and Juliet, has more visual tricks up his sleeve with this film set in the Moulin Rouge at the turn of the century. Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent, who was fantastic in Bridget Jones' Diary, star. Rated PG-13. Pearl Harbor A love triangle between two men in the armed forces and a nurse, set against the backdrop of World War II and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The film cost $135 million and stars Jon Voight, Cuba Gooding Jr., Ben Affleck, Alec Baldwin and more. Rated PG-13. Shrek The voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow are featured in this computer-generated, surefire hit. I found it lacking a little, though I can't place my finger on exactly what. There were very funny parts and Eddie Murphy was terrific, but they didn't carry some jokes far enough and others were carried too far. The kids will love it and don't let this review stop them. Rated PG. Spy Kids Yes! This movie is awesome. Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino are great as international spies/parents, while Alan Cumming, Tony Shalhoub and Teri Hatcher are amazing as the bad guys. The kids steal the show though, as their portrayals of sparring siblings is both touching and hilarious. Rated PG. The Animal A police officer is involved in a near fatal car accident. He only survives because a mad scientist replaces his injured organs with animal parts. Now he must keep the animal within as he fights crime and falls in love. Sounds hokey, but looks hysterical. Rated PG-13. The Mummy Returns Set ten years after the original, Rick (Brendan Fraser) and his girl, Evelyn, are living in London and raising a son. Imhotep, the mummy, comes to a British Museum and starts raising cain. Meanwhile, the Scorpion King, (The Rock) rises from his grave and battles with Imhotep. If you liked the first one, this is just as good. Rated PG-13. What's The Worst That Could Happen? Martin Lawrence and Danny DeVito star in this film about a thief who is caught robbing a billionaire, who then steals the thief's ring. The hijinks escalate as the two men battle for the ring. Rated PG-13. Also Playing Cast Away Tom Hanks stars as a man obsessed with time. That is, until his plane crashes and leaves him on a deserted island for four years. This is an amazing film and Hanks is awesome. Rated PG-13. Exit Wounds Steven Seagal and DMX star in this action picture about corrupt cops in the inner city. If you like to see and hear bones breaking in a variety of ways, this would be the movie for you. Rated R. Freddy Got Fingered I laughed, but not as much as I should have. This is a movie for Tom Green fans and even then, it still isn't very good. It never feels like a real movie. Rated R. Get Over It A romantic teen comedy that did not do very well. This is about a guy who gets dumped and tries to make his ex jealous. Of course, he falls in love with the girl he is using and all ends well. probably. I will admit that I didn't waste my time or money. Rated PG-13. |
