PTC sewer improvement project nearing completion

A project to replace three sewage pump stations in Peachtree City is partially completed.

The only major task remaining is the construction at pump station number one, which is located off Ga. Highway 54 at Lake Peachtree. It's expected to be up and running sometime in August ahead of schedule, said Larry Turner, general manager of the Peachtree City Water and Sewage Authority.

Pump Station 8, which serves the Publix shopping center off Hwy. 54 East and Shiloh Mobile Home Park, is already back in service, Turner said. And Pump Station 5, located off Flat Creek Road and serving a small residential area, is expected to go on-line next week, he added.

The project to replace the pump stations is $600,000. But putting in new equipment turned out to be cheaper than refurbishing old equipment, Turner said.

Pump Station 1 will have a backup power generator once construction is complete. The failures at that pump station in the past have been due to power failures, so the generator should eliminate those problems, Turner said.

Pump station number one is one of the largest stations in the system, serving the area from the intersection of Hwys. 54 and 74 all the way up to the Aberdeen Parkway.

The pump stations needed to be replaced for a variety of reasons, including their age and the fact they were small for the sewage capacity the system is handling now, Turner said.

No one is likely to notice the affects of the improvements, Turner said, "But it will improve the reliability of the pump stations."
