Classical music on tap this weekend

There is a relatively new opportunity for county youth interested in performing classical music or joining an orchestra.

The Pro Musica Community Youth Orchestra began practicing last September. Rehearsals are every Saturday at the Fayette Community Church, which is the orchestra's permanent home. The group has performed two concerts already. Its next performance will be this evening at 7. Admission is free.

With 22 students, the orchestra is continually growing. The students range in age from 8 to 17 and the current instruments represented are violins, flutes, cellos, trumpet, tuba, percussion instruments, string bass and keyboard. The group is conducted by Barbara Salter, Ph.D., who is assisted by Nancy Day and Bernadette Dziesinski. Day and Dziesinski facilitate the operation of the orchestra by maintaining the library, program design and general organization of the orchestra.

Salter has invested over 36 years in teaching. She received her bachelor's in music from Cornell College and, upon receiving the Fulbright Scholarship, went to study at the Wiener Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna, Austria, where she received her doctorate. She worked with orchestras, operas, performed church music and had solo performances.

Salter left Vienna for Heidelburg, Germany and formed her own concert series. She recorded with the South German Radio, performing on restored organs from the 18th and 19th century. She also worked with the Heidelburg City Orchestra and Opera. After returning to the states, Salter received her master of divinity and doctorate of ministry at Emory University. She currently resides in Fayetteville.

The free concert will feature classical, contemporary and chamber music. For information or to audition for a chair in the orchestra, phone Salter at 770-360-6817 or Bernadette Dziesisnki at 770-716-2708 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be more classical music performances this week. Cirrus will perform at the Fayette County Library Thursday at 7 p.m.

Cirrus, consisting of Emily Webb on flute, John Black on oboe, Cynthia Van Wert on vocals and Pamela Martin on piano, will perform chamber music selections from Foote, Still, Quilter, Charles and Lehan. Admission to their concert is free.

Cirrus will also perform at the Peachtree City United Methodist Church Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m.
