Georgia Academy of Dance celebrates with annual concert

Georgia Academy of Dance in Peachtree City will present its 11th annual Celebration Concert featuring the full-length ballet "Alice in Wonderland" and contemporary dance production of "This City Never Sleeps" Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3.

Since its inception in 1990, GAD has been committed to bringing quality productions to the community as well as providing an avenue of intense study and performing opportunities to those who desire a professional career in dance.

The tale of Alice in Wonderland is a familiar one. A girl falls down a rabbit hole and experiences a world that gets curiouser and curiouser. "This City Never Sleeps" will combine many different dance styles and showcase the amazing work of the dancers.

Owner and director Sherri Davis presents her passion for dance with over 25 years of specialized training. Davis has performed and promoted her art form in many genres, from the opera and theater stage to classical ballet audiences. She brings her philosophy of dance to the classroom by combining her professional career with her own experiences to create an atmosphere of fun for the student.

Georgia Dance Theatre, a civic, nonprofit organization, was founded in 1990 by Davis. GDT employs professional and amateur dancers gifted in many different styles of dance. The professional company, which is the only one in surrounding local counties, has existed since 1997 and is currently seven members strong. The company provides more than 30 scholarship members the opportunity to train with educators in fine arts, including such ballet masters as Ramazan Bapov, former principal of Bolshoi Ballet Theatre and silver medallist to Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Student company dancers audition each year with hundreds of other students around the world to attend prestigious summer dance programs. This year many GDT members were accepted to School of American Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, and The Pennsylvania Ballet. GAD recipients have been granted scholarships for these schools.

The Celebration Concert will be presented at Starr's Mill High School auditorium. "This City Never Sleeps" will be Saturday at 7 p.m., and "Alice In Wonderland" will be Sunday at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 general admission and can be purchased at the door or at Georgia Academy of Dance. For information or auditions phone Georgia Academy of Dance at 770-631-3128.
