Lots of summer camps available for young athletes

Is there an athlete in your family that is looking for an activity to keep him or her busy during the summer months? If so, there are a plethora of sports camps available for them.

The Tyrone Recreation Department will offer Summer Sports Camps for children ages 5-8 and children ages 9-13. "Fundamentals" is open to campers ages 5-8 for a fee of $70. They will learn the fundamental skills of sports like soccer, football, basketball and tennis. The camp will run June 4-8 from 9 a.m.-noon. "Life Sports" will be open to campers ages 9-13 for a fee of $90. The camp will run June 4-8 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The camps will take place at Shamrock Park in Tyrone. The Tyrone Recreation department will also offer Jump Basketball Camp from June 18-20. The camp, which will be held at the Shamrock Park basketball courts, is open to children ages 6-12 years old for a fee of $50. The registration deadline is June 12.

For the soccer players in the area, International Soccer Camps and the Atlanta Silverbacks will offer two great soccer camps. There will be a day camp in peachtree City at the Glenloch Soccer fields from June 11-15. Campers ages 5-7 will play from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for a fee of $95, while campers ages 8-15 will play from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. for a fee of $145. The overnight camp will be at North georgia College June 24-29, July 8-13 or July 29-Aug. 3. Call 770-539-9905 for more information or to register.

The Soccer Centre in Fayetteville will offer camps for players ages 4-6 and players 7-14. Muppet camps will run June 25-29 and July 23-27. from 10-11:30 a.m. Camps for older players will be offered June 18-22 and July 16-20. Full day and half day camps are available. For the softball players in the area, the Southern Aces School of Fast Pitch will conduct instructional skills camps at McCurry Park in Fayetteville, Meade Field in Peachtree City and Hunter Park in Newnan for girls ages 8-18. Call 770-785-7333 or visit www.eteamz.com/saces for more information.

The Higher Ground Softball Camps will be offered at several sites this summer for softball players of all caliber. Camps are available for teams, girls interested fastpitch or slowpitch, resident camps or camps for commuters. Call 770-229-386-9770 for ore information.

Former Major Leaguer Scott Fletcher will offer a baseball camp for players ages 9-16 at the fayette County Youth Fields June 18-22. The camp runs from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. for players ages 9-12 and from 1-5 p.m. for players ages 13-16. The cost of the camp is $200 a player. Call 770-663-7848 for more information.

Applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. Boys, ages 8-19 and Girls, ages 10-19, can apply. There are camps located all over the country. Former participants include Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Jerry Stackhouse and Antawn Jamison. Players are selected by invitation only and college scholarships are possible for players named to the All-American Team. For an evaluation form, call 704-568-6801.

The Fayette County Recreation Department will present lifetime sports skill builders at the Kiwanis Center from June 25-29. The camp runs from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at a fee of $90 per camper. The camp is open to children ages 8-13. Registration deadline is June 15. Call 770-461-9714.

The Fayette County Recreation Department will offer Olympic fencing camp, June 4-8 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. The camp is open to children 7-11 years old at a cost of $55 per camper.

The Wendell Coffee Golf Center will offer summer break junior golf camps every week from Monday -Thursday beginning May 29. The cost is $175 per week. Call 770-969-4469 for more information or to register.

The Lady Tiger Basketball Camp will be June 4-8 at Fayette County High School. The camp will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. The fee is $115. Applications are available at Fayette County High School or by calling Jenni Defler at 678-817-1578.

The McIntosh Volleyball Booster Club will present a volleyball clinic at Booth Middle School on Saturday, June 2 from 12:30-5 p.m. The clinic is for beginners and will emphasize basic skills. Sandy Creek will have their Basketball Camp 2001, June 11-15. The camp is open to boys and girls in Grades 4-9 and will run from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. Coach Richard Francis, County Coach of the Year in 1996, 1997 and 2001, will conduct the camp, which will consist of learning fundamental skills, low post development, one on one moves, and 2Ball and free throw contests. the fee for the camp is $125.Call 770-477-1618 for more information or to register.

Joe Machnik's No. 1 Goalkeeper Camp and No. 1 Striker Camp will be held at the Darlington School from Sunday, June 10 - Friday, June 15 and in Rome, Ga. from Saturday, June 16 - Thursday, June 21. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 10-18. Call 1-800-622-4645 for a free brochure.
