Local and national players perform well at Peach State Junior tennis tournament By MICHAEL

Many coillegiate tennis coaches were on hand at te Peachtree City Tennis Center this weekend for the Peach State Junior Tennis Tournament. The tournament is on the USTA schedule and 13 USTA sections are represented from Southern California to New England. Many of our local players played in the tournament, facing some of the best junior players in the nation. The first age division in the tournament featured players ages 12 and under. Natalie Pluskota of Newnan lost to Pender Sessoms in the first round, 6-2, 6-1, while Jennifer Betts of Peachtree City lost to Holly Johnson, 6-0, 6-0 in the second round after a bye in the first round. Sessoms and Johnson faced off in the final. In the Boys 12 division, Michael Browder of Peachtree City lost to Blaze Schwartz, 6-2, 6-1. Peachtree City's Marc Dwyer played in the Boys 14 division and defeated Ryan Sweeting, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. In the second round, Dwyer faced Bobby Deye and lost, 6-4, 6-0. Dwyer's brother James played in the Boys 16 division and lost in the first round to Jack Komar in three sets. He won the first set, 6-4, but lost the next two, 6-4, 6-4. Brenton James won his first match in the Boys 16 division, defeating David Sheng, 6-3, 6-0. James lost the match in the second round to Eric Hodgman in three sets. he won the first set, 6-2, but lost the next two, 6-3, 6-4. Jenny Shular of Peachtree City lost her first round match in the Girls 16 division to Bugsy Bauer in three sets. She won the first set, 6-3, but lost the next two, 6-4, 6-2. Priscilla Roberts of Peachtree City defeated Elizabeth Conyer in the first round, 6-3, 6-3, then defeated Jennifer Larson, the third seed, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round. Roberts faced off against Carlin Cochran in the third round and won, 6-2, 7-6(5). Her next opponent was Kristi Miller, who won by a score of 6-0, 6-4. Fayetteville was well represented in the Girls 18 division. Nancy Peaden defeated Lara Maurer in the first round, 6-4, 6-4 and then defeated Ashley Robards, the fifth seed, in the second round 6-2, 7-5. In the third round, Peaden faced the third seed, Staci Stevens, and lost 6-2, 6-1. Kacie Anson had a similar experience. She defeated Katie Karhohs in the first round, 7-5, 6-3 and then beat Kendall Cline in the second round, 6-2, 6-0. The third round was her last though as she fell to the fifth seed, Ashley Schellhas, 6-0, 6-1. It was a successful tournament for the Tennis Center because it continues to grow each year and it was successful for our local players as they proved their mettle against some of the top junior players in the nation. |
