School celebrates new playground with ribbon cutting ceremony

Thanks to the help of parents and Sen. Greg Hecht, students at Tyrone Elementary School now have a new playground to enjoy.

Although an expensive undertaking, the school's PTO raised over $20,000 through various fund-raising activities to replace the deteriorating swings and playground equipment previously housed on the school's grounds. In addition to the money raised by parents, a state grant, which Hecht helped the school obtain, enabled Tyrone Elementary to secure enough funds to finish the project.

The school recently had a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the new playground. As parents and the student body cheered her on, Tyrone Mayor Sheryl Lee officially opened the playground by cutting the ribbon with a pair of hedge clippers. Lee served on the playground committee and was instrumental in helping to select the equipment that was purchased.

Also participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony were other members of the playground committee. They included physical education teacher Cindy Carpenter, who served as chairman, assistant Principal Linda Kipa, Principal Eddie Pollard and PTO President Janet Vines.
