Students culprit of debris left at PTC facilities

What passes for good clean fun for local high school students has forced extra cleanup work on city employees at the Kedron boat docks off Peachtree Parkway and the Meade girls softball parking lot in the past week.

On both occasions, hundreds of youths were involved in an "unsupervised frenzy," leaving behind empty shaving cream cans, bottles, boxes, discarded signs and other debris, according to city officials.

Police responded to the incident at the Meade complex and disbursed the youths. Additionally, police have responded to numerous complaints of vandalism such as eggs thrown at homes and vehicles that have been "Saran-Wrapped."

City officials say they are worried these incidents could lead to serious violations; parents are being asked to speak to their children and remind them of the consequences of their actions.

The incidents could be tied in to the winding down of the school year, city officials have said. Police and other city officials will be watching the situation closely in the weeks to come, according to an official statement released by the city.

At the Kedron boat docks, much of the debris had extended into the water, continuing up Interlochen Drive and beyond the nearby neighborhood, officials said.

The debris left bordered on vandalism and cost thousands of dollars in staff and equipment time to clean up the mess, officials said. In addition, time spent to clean up the messes took crews away from other duties around the city.
