City gets ready to impose moratorium

The city of Senoia took the first step Monday night toward imposing a 90-day moratorium on new zoning requests.

City Council conducted the first read of an ordinance that would postpone consideration of any residential zoning requests for at least 90 days.

The measure comes on the heels of rezoning requests that were turned down by the city in recent months. The council turned down two requests by Steve Entrekin to build more than 100 houses on Rockaway Road and also turned down a request to for a development fronting Ga. Highway 85.

Senoia Mayor Joan Trammell suggested the moratorium be put in place to give the Planning Commission more time to evaluate the city's new zoning category that favors open space development, but allows for lots as small as one-quarter acre.

Monday, Planning Commission member Jack Merrick said he felt 90 days would be enough time for his group to work out all the specifics in the new zoning categories.

The city will conduct the second reading of the ordinance at its June 4 meeting and, if approved, the moratorium would start June 5.
