Libraries offer reading programs for vacationing children By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
Summer has always been a perfect time to catch up on your reading and this summer will be no different, as the local libraries will offer a vacation reading program for children and a reading club for adults. This year's theme is "The library is the place to be spotted this summer." The program is a combined effort with the South Carolina Public Libraries. There will be special guests, shows and programs at the libraries over the summer, and there will be lots of reading. Some of the guests coming to a library near you this summer are puppeteer Cliff Patton, magicians Ken Scott and David Ginn, musician Bruce Bernstein, and storyteller Curtis Richardson. Fayette Community Theatre also will present the play "Who's Afraid of the Big, Bad Wolf?" Registration for the vacation reading programs starts today. The program is open to children up to age 16. Each child receives a folder at the time of registration and keeps track of reading activity for the summer. There are prizes and incentives when certain numbers of hours have been reached and books read to a child count as if the child has read them. The program ends July 28 and an awards ceremony will be offered Aug. 1. There is a lot going on at your local library this summer and even more in the books on the shelves. Get spotted at the library this summer; it is one of the cooler places you can be. For more information on the program, call the Fayette County Library at 770-461-8841, the Peachtree City Library at 770-631-2520, or the Tyrone Library at 770-487-1565. |
