Newnan School of Dance to perform 'The Wizard of Oz.' By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
We have all grown up knowing the story of "The Wizard of Oz." Dorothy Gale, afraid that Miss Gulch will kidnap her dog, runs away from her family farm and gets caught in a tornado. When she lands, she is in the land of Oz and must find her way to the Wizard to see if he can help her find her way home. Along the way she meets some new friends and battles an evil witch out for revenge. Though the story is familiar because of the film's annual appearance on television, the presentation by the Newnan School of Dance this weekend is not as familiar to everyone. The ballet production, directed by Bettina Carrol, will be presented in the Duke Auditorium at Starr's Mill High School Saturday, May 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. A classical "White Ballet" will be presented before the show. This has been a tradition of the company for over 37 years. The role of Dorothy will be shared by two girls. Becky Hudson, a rising senior at McIntosh High School, will be Dorothy at the 2 p.m. show. She is the new co-captain of the Chiefette Dance Team and has had a long career with the Newnan School of Dance. She started dancing with them at the age of 4 and her first role was as a mouse in "The Wizard of Oz." Rebekah Turk of Roopville will perform the role of Dorothy at the 7 p.m. performance. Turk is a 2001 graduate of the Advanced Academy at the State University of West Georgia. Tickets can be purchased at the Newnan School of Dance or at the door. Admission is $5 for adults and children. For information call 770-253-2623. |
