This could
help some save on taxes
One of my neighbors recently informed me of considerable property tax savings. I could have taken advantage of this three years ago. The information is on the back of your tax bill, but I never look there after getting over the "sticker shock" amount on the front. The following is taken from a brochure I picked up at the tax office, "Important Tax Information, Fayette County, George Wingo, Tax Commissioner": "Homeowners 65 years and older, or homeowners that are totally disabled and receive a net taxable Georgia income less than $15,000 (which includes the net taxable income of each member of the person's family who resides in the homestead) receives a 100 percent local school exemption." "Homeowners 65 years and older, or homeowners that are totally disabled (with no income limitations) receive a 50 percent local school exemption." "Local county exemptions for county m&o [maintenance and operations] and fire protection are increased to $5,000 where applicable." Residents who may fall under one of the above criteria have only until June 1 to apply for these exemptions. Take a copy of your latest Georgia income tax return with you to the tax office. Check Line 15 to be sure you are eligible. John Regan Fayetteville
