Good old boy politics: Lenox still just doesn't get it

Sometimes, even when you put it in print, some people still do not get it. Such is the case with the current Peachtree City mayor, Bob Lenox.

Councilman Dan Tennant wrote a letter complaining about Mr. Lenox arranging a sweetheart separation package for [City Clerk Nancy] Faulkner in secret. The mayor thought that by sending memos to other council members he was doing this in the open.

The mayor is a throwback to the good old boy days. He knew his "yes" women, [Council member Carol] Fritz and especially [Council member Annie] McMenamin, would okay his wishes, so he needed no input from the citizen's councilman, Dan Tennant.

Mr. Tennant, obviously, wanted this matter done at a council meeting where there could be some discussion and debate. The mayor could not support his gift to Ms. Faulkner in public so he tried to do it in secret. Mr. Tennant rightly resented such back-room politics.

The mayor said in his memo, "I personally feel it is a fair settlement." This is the same mayor who felt that the two builders he put on his annexation committee would be objective, possibly voting against the annexation and thus costing their companies huge profits.

If Ms. Faulkner has a case for harassment, let her proceed in the courts. The appearance of a payoff makes Mr. Tennant look guilty and is a rip-off for the taxpayers. He has every reason to object to the way this was handled.
