Parrish set to tee it up for Mercer By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
Ashley Parrish's father and grandfather are golf-a-holics. When Ashley was 8, her grandfather made her a golf club and, though she doesn't use it anymore, she still has it. Parrish is one of the top golfers for the Starr's Mill varsity golf team and she recently signed a letter of intent to attend Mercer University and play golf there. Parrish chose Mercer because of its size and location. "It was the first school I visited and afterwards none of the schools I visited could compare," she said. She will be an asset to the university both athletically and academically. Parrish, who plans to major in biology at Mercer, has been a member of the yearbook staff for four years and was the editor this year. She has been a member of the golf team for four years and was the low medalist in her sophomore year. She was also Flat Creek Country Club's Junior Club champion the last two years. Parrish placed third in the Georgia Peach tournament and won the local Optimist Club's junior tournament. One of her many career highlights was hitting her first hole in one this year while playing for Starr's Mill at Whitewater Country Club. Her coaches for Starr's Mill, Chad Phillips and Jon Glower, credit her work ethic as one of her keys to success, while Linda Hunt, the head pro at Summer Grove golf course and Parrish's golf teacher, sees a great golf mind. "She's a smart player," said Hunt. "She has matured as a player and shows excellent course management. She has put in a lot of hours to the sport and she has been rewarded with this scholarship." As for the future, Parrish hopes to continue to develop as a player and see where that takes her.
