The truth is out there: Rebels fought for rights

I am, once again, responding to Marc Michael's letter written about the Southern Confederacy. I realize that some individuals have a twisted view of past history, especially dealing with the War Between the States; however, I am completely dumbfounded as to how someone could be so misinformed as Mr. Michael. With so many reading materials available to the public in this day and time I cannot understand how someone could totally ignore the hard evidence which speaks out against Mr. Michael's thinking.

I would have to recommend that anyone who thinks as he should read a little more and use good logic and common sense to see through the lies that have enveloped this era of history. The facts are there. The proof is there. And yet the lies and misinformation continue on nothing more than a foundation of sand.

Mr. Michael, have you ever read Mr. Lincoln's second inaugural address? Have you ever read Mr. Jeff Davis' first and second inaugural address? Have you ever read copies of letters sent home from young Confederate soldiers? Can you tell us which state back in the late 1700s tried to abolish slavery? I could write out a list from now till doomsday, but unless you read and seek the truth, your beliefs will remain firmly attached to nothing more than false myth and pure lies.

The slave-holding population of the South was about 6 percent. Do you honestly feel that thousands upon thousands of southern men would be willing to suffer and die over an issue that did not affect them whatsoever? No one in their right mind would die over an issue that they could care less about, I know I certainly wouldn't.

The great, honorable southern men fought for state rights and to get out from under the burden of a federal government that was putting too much financial strain on them. Do you realize that the majority of the funds that poured into the Treasury were from the southern states? Hmmm, that in itself should ring a warning bell.

I don't expect to change your mind at this moment but if you are really seeking the truth then take up my advice and dig a little deeper. If you are honest with yourself then you will be somewhat surprised at what you find.

As for myself, I will continue to stand tall and be proud of what my ancestors fought and died for. Southern blood runs through my veins and to God I am thankful for that and I am thankful to those Confederate men who sought out a better way of life for themselves and their fellow southern countrymen. They knew when they went to war what the fight was all about. I'm just saddened that you don't.
