Local soccer teams advance to second round of state playoffs

The first round of the state soccer playoffs has come and gone. The boys and McIntosh girls played on Tuesday night and the other girls teams played on Wednesday. All of the local representatives from 4-AAAAA have advanced, while Sandy Creek's girls, our only local representative in AAAA, lost.

McIntosh's boys beat Windsor Forest, 1-0. They will face Warner Robins on Monday. The Chiefs defeated Warner Robins, 2-1 when they met less than a month ago. The two teams played in a rescheduled match from the McIntosh Classicc and the game was both intense and physical. Fayette County's boys defeated Benedictine on Tuesday, 1-0, as Adam Lester scored on a direct kick. The tigers will face Coffee on Monday. The Starr's Mill boys team edged out Bradwell Institute, 2-1, getting goals from jordan Davis and Chris Lambing. Starr's Mill will face Griffin on Monday.

For the girls, McIntosh beat Glynn Academy, 15-0. The Lady Chiefs scored 30 seconds into the game and got goals from many players including Julie Herdic, Keri pendergrass, Geneva Baron, Erin Johnson, Alicia Shulz, and Brittany Jones. The McIntosh girls are scheduled to meet Griffin on Tuesday. Newnan defeated St. Vincents, 4-0 on Wednesday night. The Lady Cougars got a hat trick from Lanie Scott and a goal from Amanda Morton, who assisted all three of Scott's goals. St. Vincent was the 3-AAAAA champion. Newnan will face Colquitt County on Tuesday night. Starr's Mill defeated Wayne County, 10-0 on Wednesday night and will face Hardaway on Tuesday night, while Fayette County beat Jenkins, 2-0 and will face Lowndes on Tuesday night. Sandy Creek's girls lost their match in the opening round of the AAAA tournament to Lakeside-Evans, 9-0. It was reported that the game was very physical and closer than the score would indicate.
