Programs get government help

Programs that make recordings for the blind, provide support services for homeless women and children, and feed the hungry during holidays in Fulton County are among 131 that will share $4.4 million in human services grants during 2001-2002.

The funds, approved by the Board of Commissioners at its Wednesday, April 18 meeting, reflect a $1 million increase over the 2000-2001 funding cycle.

The Georgia Radio Reading Service, Community Advanced Practice Nurses Inc., the Helping Hands Holiday Dinner Inc., and other community-based agencies were recommended to the board by the Human Services Coordinating Committee.

Selected non-profit agencies in north Fulton County Commission District 3 will receive a total of $276,000; Sandy Springs District 4 will receive $471,400; northwest Atlanta/southwest Fulton District 5 will receive $875,000; central/east Atlanta District 6 will receive $2.02 million; and southwest/south Fulton District 7 will receive $817,695.

The HSCC consists of representatives from county departments and councils specializing in the funded categories. The Fulton County Human Services Department administers the grants.
