The Lady Hornets volleyball team at Alabama State College will have a little more sting next year. Racine Francis, a senior at Sandy Creek High School, signed a letter of intent to attend the university in the fall.

Francis, daughter of Sandy Creek boys basketball and tennis coach Rick Francis, will receive a full scholarship to play on the school's volletball team as an outside hitter. While with the Lady Patriots, Francis played middle blocker and helped the team make the Elite Eight of the AAAA state tournament. She was named Most Valueable Player of the team this year and was also named to the All-Area and All-State teams. Francis is the first volleyball player from Sandy Creek to be named to the All-State squad.

"I really liked the school," said Francis, when asked why she chose the Montogomery-based college. "The coach is really down to earth, my teammates seem very cool and I feel like I can contribute to the program."

Her coach at Sandy Creek, James Slayton agrees. "Her skills are very good and she is very coachable. She has come a long way in her career at Sandy Creek and she is still progressing."

Francis has a lot of memories from her four years at Sandy Creek, but none more special than advancing to the elite eight this year.

"We lost our first game and almost everybody thought that we were done, but we came back and pushed ourselves and made it."

It was certainly a special season for the Lady Patriot volleyball team and for Francis, this was a very happy ending.
