The high school soccer playoffs are an indication of spring, much like the pollen coating your car and the smell of your neighbors cooking out. The boys and girls soccer teams of Region 4-AAAAA from Fayette County all played in the second round of the region playoffs last night, hoping to advance to the region championships this Friday. Sandy Creek's Lady Patriots also played last night to determine their seeding in the upcoming state tournament.

Most of the local teams had an easy time of advancing to the second round. The only close match was the Fayette County boys contest with the Evans Knights. The game went into overtime and the Tigers were able to send Evans on a long bus ride home. The Lady Tigers faced Stockbridge on Friday night and won 6-0. Amy Eller scored one goal and assisted on three others, while Rachel Frazier, Lydia Sherwin, Britni Emerson and Heidi Hogue all netted one goal a piece. The wins put both Fayette County teams in the second round to face Starr's Mill.

Starr's Mill hosted a double header on Friday night. The Lady Panthers defeated East Coweta, 8-0, getting a hat trick from Katey Price and Lindsey Wegryzyn and two goals from Shelley Wegryzyn. The boys defeated Newnan, 8-0. The Panthers got two goals from Eric Simonsen, and goals from Josh Vanderbush, Jordan Davis, Mikey Hubbard, Brandon Henry, Chris Lambing and Danny Bates.

McIntosh's boys and girls hosted Henry County on Friday and both teams won. The Lady Chiefs won 15-0, which qualifies them for the state tournament for the tenth year in a row. They are currently ranked first in the state in AAAAA and third in the NSCAA/adidas national rankings. The boys defeated Henry County, 4-1. Matt Clements scored three goals and Nick Corley added one to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead at the half and a win. Last week it was incorrectly reported that Clements scored both goals against Warner Robins. Stephen Wilson recorded the go ahead goal for the Chiefs in that match.

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots played at Salem High School last night and will start the AAAA state tournament on May 2.
