Women's soccer has grown exponentially over the last few years and it takes another huge step now as the WUSA gets underway.

The Atlanta Beat, our own professional women's soccer team, will kick off the season this Saturday against the New York Power.

The Beat is comprised of national team members, college standouts and W-league players. Local stars Julie and Nancy Augustyniak, both recent members of The Atlanta Classics and Clemson University's women's team, play on the team, as do Brianna Scurry and Nikki Serlenga, both members of the U.S. national team. Other members of the team include Charmaine Hooper and Sharolta Nonen of the Canadian national team, Sun Wen of the Chinese national team and Homare Sawa of the Japanese national team.

Their opponents this weekend have three members of the U.S. team; Tiffeny Milbrett, Christie Pearce and Sara Whalen, and three other members of national teams; Gao Hung of China, Anne Nielsen of Denmark, and Gro Espeth of the Norwegian Olympic team.

The game will be at noon Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium and will be televised on TNT. Tickets are $8-20 and can be purchased from any Ticketmaster outlet or online at www.theatlantabeat.com.
