Regular season of tennis ends, sets up interesting region tourney

The regular season of high school tennis is over and local teams are preparing for the region playoffs which begin this Thursday.

McIntosh closed out the remainder of its season with wins, setting up an interesting region tournament match-up with county rival Fayette County.

The Lady Chiefs faced Riverdale and won 4-0. The team got wins in singles from Rebecca Timmis and Denise Daughenbaugh and in doubles from Sunya Sweeney and Adriane Hodges and Shelby Carlson and Stacey Brundrette. Both the boys and girls played at Newnan High School and both teams won 5-0.

The boys got wins from B.J. James, Robert Lochridge, and Mike Saheim in singles as well as wins by Phil Van Fossan and Justin Hale and Sundeep Sood and Yosuke Nomura in doubles. The girls got wins from Priscilla Roberts, Timmis and Daughenbaugh in singles and Hodges, Sweeney, Carlson and renae Clark in doubles.

McIntosh came back after spring break and swept East Coweta. The winners for the boys in single matches were Lochridge, Hale and Van Fossan, while Sood and Nomura won their doubles match, as did Clayton Wampler and Osman Faruqui. The singles winners for the girls were Roberts, Timmis and Ream Faruqui, while Carlson and Sweeney and Clark and Brundrette won their doubles match.

The following day saw McIntosh take on Fayette County High School. Both the boys and girls teams edged out the Tigers 3-2. James Dwyer and Hale won their singles matches, while Faruqui and Nomura won their doubles match. For the girls, Timmis and Daughenbaugh won their singles matches, while Sweeney and Carlson won their doubles match.

The girls' final game of the season was against North Clayton. The lady Chiefs won 5-0, getting wins from Roberts, Daughenbaugh and Hodges in singles and from Carlson and Sweeney and Clark and Brundrette in doubles.

Starr's Mill's boys finished out their season with wins as well. They defeated East Coweta 4-1 last Tuesday with wins from John and Adam Esterline in singles and from Patrick Davis and Apurva Doshi and Brian Spears and Parrish Walton in doubles. Wednesday, the Panthers defeated Newnan 5-0. The winners in singles were John and Aadme Esterline and Chad Newton, while Davis, Doshi, Spears and Walton won their doubles matches. Their final match of the season was against Fayette County High School and the boys won 3-2. John Esterline won his singles match, while the two doubles teams won again.

The Panthers finished the season 8-1 and will enter the region tournament as the second seed. Their only loss came at the hands of McIntosh. The tournament begins Thursday afternoon at Clayton College & State University.
