Starr's Mill track teams warm up for hosting the region meets

Starr's Mill's boys and girls track team hosted a meet against Westminster and Alexander High School last week.

The Panthers placed second with 57 points, while the Lady Panthers placed third with 40 points. This was their final meet of the regular season before the region meets begin this weekend.

For the boys team, Jason Giordano placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.03. Brad McLaren placed second and Drew Cofty placed third in the 200-meter dash with 23.82 and 23.84 respectively, while Mitch Sargent placed third and Ricardo Ramos placed second in the 400-meter dash with times of 33.45 and 33.47 respectively. The panthers 4x100-meter relay team captured first place with a time of 44.44, while the 4x400-meter relay team placed second with a time of 3:43.79.

Matt Fuhrman captured second place in the 110-meter high hurles with a time of 16.57, while Neal Sebastian placed third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with 43.27. Cagney Blackmon placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5'10", Brad McLaren placed third in the pole vault with 11', and Jason Laney placed second in the shot put with a time of 46'05.50".

Starr's Mill took the first six spots in the long jump, with the top three finishers being Reuben Houston at first with a jump of 20'10", Matt Fuhrman at second with a jump of 19'04" and Johnny Edwards at third with a jump of 19'03". Houston also placed first in the triple jump with a jump of 44'11", while Che Brewer placed second with a jump of 42'04.50"

The girls got many good performances as well. Iceland Williams placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.88 and placed second in the 200-meter with 28.26. Jennifer Kroupa placed first in the 400-meter with a time of 1:05.15 while Carly Hutchison placed second with 1:05.62. Ashley Meredith took third place in the 3,200-meter with 12:53.7, while Amanda Owena placed first in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 17.94. Owens also placed first in the high jump with a jump of 5'.

The Lady Panthers also did well in the 4x100-meter relay. The A team took second place with a time of 4:38.90, while the B team placed third with a time of 4:42.36. Heather Brown, Jinee Burdge and Malia Henson all tied in the pole vault with a vault of 6' and Stephanie Gresham placed second in the long jump with a jump of 14'0.50".

The 4-AAAAA boys region meet begins with Field Events this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Starr's Mill High School.
