Teams play big in important baseball games By MICHAEL

Things are starting to heat up in the high school baseball season. Bats are waking up, teams are playing above their heads and no game is a sure thing anymore. Starr's Mill is one of the teams that woke up of late. In their last four games the team went 3-1 and scored 42 runs. The Panthers (6-8) defeated North Clayton last Tuesday 13-3, and then beat McIntosh the next day 12-2. In their win over the Chiefs, the Panthers got 11 hits, two apiece from Jason Earwood and Arlando Hinton, three RBIs from Jake Jones and a good performance on the mound from Myron Jensen, who went six innings and struck out five batters. Saturday, Starr's Mill defeated Rockdale County 10-8 and Monday the team lost to Fayette County 9-7. Fayette County (9-8) has gone 2-1 in its last three games. The Tigers beat North Clayton 8-1 last Wednesday and then lost to East Coweta 15-11 last Friday before defeating Starr's Mill Monday. In their game against the Indians, the Tigers came back from a 6-0 deficit and 11-5 deficit in the game. They got four RBIs from Brad Burns and a home run from Cooper Brown in the loss. McIntosh (7-9) lost to Starr's Mill last Wednesday and then lost to Newnan, 7-0 on Saturday before rebounding with a 13-3 win over Mt. Zion, Jonesboro on Monday evening. In their game against Newnan, Billy Secor was the starting pitcher. He pitched a scoreless first inning but gave up six runs in the second. John King came on in relief and gave up one run off of three hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out two. Sandy Creek (9-8) lost to Woodward Academy last Wednesday and then had a few days off. Monday, the Patriots came back kicking and defeated Union Grove 8-0. Sandy Creek will host Westlake this afternoon at 5:30 and will play at Creekside at 4:30 p.m. Friday. In its games this week, McIntosh will play at Fayette County today at 5:55 p.m., while Starr's Mill plays at Henry County at 7 p.m. Friday, Starr's Mill will host Jonesboro at 5 p.m., while McIntosh hosts Henry County at 7 p.m., and Fayette County plays at Mt. Zion, Jonesboro at 6 p.m. |
