River's Edge Church schedules fund-raiser for Chernobyl's forgotten radiation victims

River's Edge Community Church in Fayetteville will host a Parents Night Out, Saturday, April 21 and Saturday, May 19, to raise money to bring hurting, forgotten children to America.

"Most Americans have forgotten the worst nuclear accident experienced by the world at the Chernobyl nuclear energy plant," said John Hatcher, pastor of River's Edge. "But the children of Belarus, a former Soviet Union state, still suffer from high doses of radiation and experience health-related problems. They are only about six miles from the disaster site."

To give some of the Belarusian children a break, Fayette families participate in a national program called The American Belarussian Relief Organization (ABRO).

"Essentially, families adopt the children for six weeks, pay for their travel expenses, and make sure they receive health and dental care, along with packing their bags with new clothes for their trip home," Hatcher explained.

Last summer ABRO brought 424 children and 32 chaperones. Fayette area families hosted about 50 of the children.

To give support to those families hosting the children, River's Edge Community Church will sponsor a Parent's Night Out, April 21 and May 19 from 6:30 until midnight. A tax-deductible donation of $10 is suggested for each child.
