Eating at home without cooking

Plenty of Fayette restaurants will bring a meal to you

Ever wanted to just shut yourself up in your home for a week or so?

After sitting through rush-hour traffic every day and facing the other stress-producing aspects of our regular lives, a bit of hibernation can sound very appealing. But you can't do that and survive just anywhere. I mean, you've got to eat.

Well, that problem is solved in Fayette County, at least. If you've got a telephone that works and an Internet hookup, you can be the local equivalent of Dotcomguy, the man who never left his apartment for an entire year while ordering all of his needs on the Web.

At least 14 restaurants in the county provide free delivery within certain areas and with specific order requirements. The vast majority of county residents can choose from several of these eateries and get hot meals, in several food varieties, without ever turning on the stove.

Here's an alphabetical sampling of what's out there. Keep in mind that it's not likely any of these restaurants deliver clear across the county, so look for the ones in your area.

Brother's Place, 652 N. Jeff Davis Drive, Fayetteville, 770-716-2229. Billed as "a family sports cafe," it's seen more as a place to gather with friends to watch a game on the big-screen TV. They serve much of the food you'd expect to eat while watching a game wings, sandwiches, grilled burgers and the like. But with a $30 minimum order, they'll bring the food to you.

China Cafe 9, 1019 Peachtree Parkway North, Peachtree City, 770-632-1699. An extensive menu is available from this Kedron Village eatery, and delivery is included with a $10 minimum within 2 miles or a $15 minimum within 5 miles. If you live farther away than that, call them first.

Fisher-Lee Coffeehouse, 125 Fisher Avenue, Fayetteville, 770-716-8191. Many customers come for the atmosphere of this historic house as well as for the food, which is mainly soup, sandwiches and breakfast items. Free delivery is available with a $7 minimum order.

Peking, 101 Crossing East (behind McDonald's on Hwy. 54), Peachtree City, 770-487-3838. A menu similar to China Cafe, but closer to folks in the southern half of Peachtree City. A $15 minimum order is required for delivery.

Philly Connection, 220 Peachtree East (Publix shopping center), Peachtree City, 770-486-0021. This nationwide chain is famous for its cheesesteak sandwiches and hoagies. A number of salad selections are also available. Delivery is available for lunch or dinner.

Right on Thyme, 375 East Lanier Avenue, Fayetteville, 770-716-8400. A traditional "home cooking" eatery, with a number of meats and vegetables available. The menu changes from day to day, but there's a good variety on any given day.

Roly Poly, 2007 Aberdeen Parkway, Peachtree City, 770-631-1312. Advertised as having "original rolled sandwiches," this restaurant lists 50 different choices on its takeout menu, with various combinations of meats, seafood and veggies. If you don't see a combo you like, you can pick your ingredients and roll your own. Free delivery with a $15 minimum order.

Wings & Things, Fayette Place shopping center, Fayetteville, 770-460-6151. These folks were located in what is now Brother's Place, but they moved about a half-mile south into a larger building. Wings, sandwiches, burgers, and other munchies are on the menu, and free delivery to local businesses is available Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Not to be left off this list are the ones who fueled the boom in food delivery in the past 15 years the pizza guys. The big three Domino's, Papa John's and Pizza Hut each have delivery outlets in Fayetteville and Peachtree City, so most of the county's residents are covered. Most of their phone numbers are likely posted on your refrigerator already, but if not, they're in the book. Also, these guys are usually open late, a lot later than most restaurants.

This takes care of a sizeable portion of meals for a week, but it doesn't cover the whole week. You can make up the difference, however, with a click of your mouse at www.webvan.com.

Webvan provides delivery of grocery items and a lot of other things you might want. Shop at the Web site any time, day or night, and pick a prearranged delivery window to get your merchandise. Most, if not all, of Fayette County is already within the company's metro Atlanta delivery area.

All in all, there's quite a selection of dining choices listed here. Using one of them from time to time could mean a lot of added convenience in your life. Using them a lot could mean you need to get out more.
