Local teams have big games this weekend

While McIntosh and Starr's Mill's girls soccer teams face some of the top competition in the country in the adidas Challenge Cup, the other local teams face some tough region oppponents as th season winds down.

The Fayette County Lady Tigers played at East Coweta Tuesday night and won 4-1. The Tigers got a goal from Crystal Rene de Cotret late in the first half to make it 1-0 at halftime. Everything came together for the Tigers in the second half as they scored three goals in the first 20 minutes. Goals were scored by Rachel Frazier, Ashley Kirkwood and Amy Eller.

The Lady Tigers will play at Brookwood Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and will host Riverdale Monday, followed by Stockbridge at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for Senior Night.

The easiest way to get to Brookwood is to travel on I-85 North to the Pleasant Hill Road exit. Exit to the south and travel four miles to Ronald Reagan Parkway. Head south towards Snellville and Exit at the Webb Ginn House Rd. exit. Bear to the right at the end of the ramp and drive to a four way stop. The school is on the left at 1255 Dogwood Rd.

The Fayette County boys will host Eagle's Landing at 7:30 p.m. tonight for their Senior Night.

The Newnan Lady Cougars defeated Marietta, 9-0. The Lady Cougars got hat tricks from Amanda Morton and Sister Edge, while also getting two goals from Lanie Scott and one from Katie Owens.

Newnan is 6-6 on the season and clinched the third seed in their sub-region. They will face the #2 seed from the other sub-region in the first round of the playoffs, most likely Jonesboro or Henry County.

In other good news for the Lady Cougar program, Lauren Clifton, a sophomore defender, was named as an Athlete of the Week by divarsity.com.

Sandy Creek's boys next two games will be at Rockdale County at 7:30 p.m. Apr. 17 and at Salem at 7:30 p.m. Apr. 24. The Starr's Mill boys will face the Jonesboro Cardinals Friday at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Tara Stadium.

To get to Tara Stadium, take Ga. Highway 54 through Fayetteville to Hwy. 19/41, then turn left. Go north on 19/41 to Battle Creek Road and turn right. The stadium is about a mile ahead on the right.

McIntosh's boys will play at Griffin Friday night at 8 p.m., while the girls will play several games in the adidas Challenge Cup. The McIntosh girls will face Arapahoe, Colo. at 8 p.m. Friday night and Huntsville, Ala. Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Starr's Mill Lady Panthers will face Catholic Memorial, Wisc. at 4 p.m Friday. All games in the adidas Challenge Cup will be played at the Baseball/Soccer Complex in Peachtree City on Hwy. 74. The Lady Chiefs final game of the regular season will be at home Apr. 17 at 5:30 p.m. against North Gwinnett.

In other sporting events taking place this weekend, Starr's Mill and Fayette County's boys and girls track teams will compete at the GATFXC Coaches Meet at Georgia tech on Friday and Saturday. The action begins at 6 p.m. Friday night and at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The high school baseball teams will also be busy. McIntosh will play at Newnan High School at 4:45 p.m., while Starr's Mill will play at Mt. Zion, Jonesboro at 5 p.m. Fayette County will host East Coweta at 6 p.m. Starr's Mill will host Rockdale County at 2 p.m. Saturday and will host Fayette County at 4:15 p.m. Monday. Other games Monday will include Mt. Zion Jonesboro at McIntosh at 7 p.m. and Sandy Creek at Union Grove at 5:30 p.m.
