Quilt tells story of Peachtree City Elementary
Research indicates that art helps to enhance the learning process. This month schools across the nation are celebrating art's educational contributions by participating in National Youth Art Month. Students at Peachtree City Elementary School are celebrating the month by creating a story quilt representing everyone who makes up the school's community. Keeping with the theme "Piecing It Together," approximately 400 students at the school have taken a piece of the quilt and drawn a self-portrait. School administrators including Principal Lynda Lambeth and Superintendent John DeCotis also have added their self-portraits to the quilt, which is being constructed from paper and wallpaper. DeCotis and Peachtree City Mayor Bob Lenox have signed proclamations declaring March as Youth Art Month at Peachtree City Elementary. The unveiling of the quilt took place March 22 at the school's PTO meeting. During the meeting, finishing touches were added as parents and teachers placed their own self-portraits into the piece. Jenny Horne, art teacher at Peachtree City Elementary School and chairman for Georgia's Youth Art Month, says the quilt is being modeled after the famous story quilts created by Faith Ringgold. "We had been studying her artwork in class so I thought it would be neat for us to construct our own story quilt. We are using the same concept of having a central area, which will be made up of all of our faces, and then placing decorative patches around the edges," Horne said. The quilt is now displayed in the school.
