Panthers run well in preparation of big meets

The Starr's Mill Panthers boys and girls track team hosted Eagle's Landing and Morrow last Wednesday.

The girls placed second in the meet, while the boys finished first. Both teams had a number of top three finishers.

Jennifer Kroupa placed second in the 200-meter with a time of 28.79, while Heather Krehbiel placed third in the 800-meter (2:444.64) and the 1,600-meter (5:54.03). Ashley Meredith finished in second place in the 1,600-meter with 5:53.26 and second in the 3,200-meter with 13:09.3. Katie Hughes placed third in the 3,200 with 13:35.1. The 4x400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 4:38.30.

In the field events, Amanda Owens placed third in the high jump with a jump of 4'08". Owens also placed second in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 18:46. In the 300-meter low hurdles, Erica Rutland placed third with 56.59. The Lady Panthers placed first through third in the pole vault with jumps of 6'. They were Malia Hanson, Heather Brown and Jinee Burdge, respectively. Stephanie Gresham placed first in the long jump with a jump of 15'05.75". Carmen Williams placed second in the discus with a throw of 91'08", while Erica Juhascz placed third with a throw of 83'08" Juhascz also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 29'09."

The boys team also got good performances on the track as well as in the field. In the 400-meter, Ricardo Ramos placed second with a time of 53.42, while Les Page placed third with a time of 54.06. Ramos laced first in the 800-meter with a time of 2:10.73. The Panthers took the first five positions in the 1,600-meter race with Jason Buttram, Richard Epton and Andrew Barnes placing first through third. Those three held their positions in the 3,200-meter race as well. The Panthers placed second in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.67 and placed third in the 4x400" relay with a time of 4:11.55.

In the field events, Cagney Blackmon placed second in the high jump with a jump of 5'08", while Drew Cofty placed third with a jump of 5'06." Davey Woods placed first in the pole vault with a vault of 9', while Erik Advincula placed first in the shot put with a throw of 37'11.25" and second in the discus with a toss of 105'07". In the long jump, Jimmy Edwards placed first with a jump of 19'0.75", while Cofty placed third with a jump of 18'08.75".

The Panthers will host Westminster and Alexander at Starr's Mill at 4:30 p.m. next Wednesday. Across town, Fayette County will travel to McIntosh next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
