Residents of Fayette County have always enjoyed great soccer being played in the area. Last year saw four local high schools capture state championships and all four schools are in the hunt again.

Starting Tuesday, the level of play gets kicked up a notch when the adidas Challenge Cup Women's Soccer Showcase begins.

Eight of the top women's high school teams in the nation will be playing in the showcase, including McIntosh, Starr's Mill and Parkview.

Five of the schools are nationally ranked by Student Sports Magazine: Catholic Memorial of Wisconsin, second in the nation and first in the Midwest Region; Arapahoe from Colorado, ranked fourth in the nation and first in the West region; McIntosh, ranked sixth in the nation and second in the Southeast region; Davis Senior from California, ranked 19th in the nation and third in the West Region; and Starr's Mill, ranked 22nd in the nation and fourth in the Southeast Region.

The other schools competing are Madison West from Wisconsin, Huntsville, Ala., and Parkview.

There are five NSCAA adidas All-Americans in the Challenge Cup and they come from five different schools. They are: Lindsay Dornseif, a defender for Arapahoe and Colorado's player of the Year last year; Allison Graham, a midfielder for Starr's Mill; Julie Herdic, a forward for McIntosh and the Georgia Player of the Year last year; Jennifer Kundert, a midfielder for Madison West and Wisconsin's Player of the Year last year; and Leslie Osborne, a midfielder for Catholic Memorial and 1999's Wisconsin Player of the Year.

The adidas Challenge Cup will take place at the Baseball and Soccer Complex on Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City. The action begins Tuesday as Davis Senior takes on Parkview at 6 p.m.

The following day promises a spectacular doubleheader as McIntosh meets Davis Senior at 6:30 and Arapahoe faces Starr's Mill at 8 p.m.

All eight schools will compete on Thursday. McIntosh will take on Arapahoe at 8 p.m. on Field 1, while Starr's Mill will meet Huntsville at 8 p.m. on Field 3. The 6:30 p.m. games will feature Catholic Memorial against Davis Senior and Parkview against Madison West.

Members of the Atlanta Beat, Atlanta's W-League team, will be on hand Thursday night to sign autographs and raffle off tickets to their April 21 home opener.

Friday will also be a full day. Catholic Memorial takes on Starr's Mill at 4 p.m. and then will face Huntsville at 8 p.m. Madison West will take on Arapahoe at 4 p.m. and will face McIntosh at 8 p.m. McIntosh will close out the Challenge April 14 when they take on Huntsville at 1 p.m.

Admission to the Showcase is $6 for adults and $5 for children. An all-match pass, which will allow admission to all 12 games, is $20.
