Local students win state award

Local students, Katie Culp, Whitney Jensen and Sarah Huemphfner of Fayette County, recently were honored at the Agriculture Day in Georgia ceremony at the state Capitol.

Culb, Jensen and Huemphfner won honorable mention for their visual art in the annual Agriculture Day contest sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Council Inc.

More than 1,000 students and adults took part in the statewide contest, which had "celebrating a century of Georgia agriculture; a review of its past and my vision for the future" as its theme. The participants were honored at the state Capitol March 21.

First, second and third place winners in all categories were awarded cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25, respectively. Winners were presented medals and certificates from Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin.

Agriculture Day honors the contributions of farmers and those in agriculture. The ceremony was highlighted by an appearance of Gov. Roy Barnes, who read and signed a proclamation declaring March 21 Agriculture Day in Georgia.
