Sid Bream, Terry Pendleton highlight

McDonough Road baseball weekend April 20-22

Former Atlanta Braves Sid Bream and Terry Pendleton highlight the line-up for a baseball clinic set for Saturday, April 21, 10:30 a.m. 1 p.m. at the Fayette County High School baseball field.

The clinic is part of the Sid Bream Baseball Weekend sponsored by McDonough Road Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

The event begins Friday, April 20, at 7 p.m. when Bream speaks at a men and boys supper in the fellowship hall of McDonough Road Baptist. Tickets for the supper are $5 and may be ordered by calling the church office. Reservations are required. Door prizes donated by local merchants will be drawn.

A native of Carlisle, Pa., Bream signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1985. As a free agent in 1991, he signed a three-year contract with the Braves. He signed with the Houston Astros in 1994 and retired from baseball in 1995.

In retirement, Bream spends most of his time speaking in churches, youth groups and schools. He is best remembered in Atlanta for his famous slide into homeplate Oct. 14, 1992, in game seven of the National League playoffs against the Pirates. That victory clinched the National League title for the Braves. Bream calls that slide into home his "most memorable moment in baseball."

Along with Bream, the baseball clinic Saturday features former Atlanta Brave Terry Pendleton, and former professional players David Palmer and Tim Cash. Pendleton played for Atlanta for five seasons and was named National League Most Valuable Player in 1991.

In the event of rain, the clinic will be in the community gymnasium next to the baseball field. Baseball fundamentals will be emphasized, along with lessons for life. The clinic is free, but reservations are requested by calling the church office.

The baseball weekend concludes Sunday morning when Bream speaks in the 10:55 worship service as part of the church's spring revival kick-off.

"I'm glad that Sid and his friends are willing to come and help us give this gift to our community," said David L. Chancey, pastor. "We invite all interested persons to come and meet these fine men and learn a little more about how to sharpen their baseball skills."

The church is at 352 McDonough Road. Call 770-460-5423 for information or reservations for the Friday dinner or the Saturday clinic.
