Local fencers thrust their way to world championships

The United States Fencing Association announced the selection of the team that will represent the United States at the Junior and Cadet World Championships in Gdansk, Poland next month.

Among them are several athletes who were members of the 2000 Olympic Team as well as several young fencers who have already earned medals at World Championships and World Cup events.

Amelia Gaillard of Fayetteville, Sada Jacobson of Dunwoody, Catherine Pack and Mariel Zagunis won the silver medal in the Junior women's sabre team event. Gaillard is again on the U.S. team in three women's events: Cadet (under 17), Junior (under 20) and Junior team event.

Colin Parker, also of Fayetteville, will represent the U.S. on the Junior men's sabre squad. Gaillard, Jacobson and Parker are coached by Arkady Burdan of Nellya Fencers Club in Forest park. Burdan will attend the world championships as the women's sabre coach.
