Soccer teams play tight matches before the break By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The McIntosh Lady Chiefs went on a road trip to North Carolina last weekend. Their first game was against Broughton, NC, the number two team in the nation, and they lost, 1-0. The Lady Chiefs, last ranked first in the nation in a Fox Sports poll, were missing three starters and had Keri Pendergrass, a starting forward playing sweeper. Broughton scored with 10 minutes remaining in the game. On Saturday, the Chiefs played Apex, another North carolina team, ranked as one of the top 10 teams in the state. Geneva Baran scored a goal and Brittany Jones added two more as the Lady Chiefs went on to win 3-1. "We worked hard," said Coach Stephen Buckner. "We're still a good team and now we just have to pick up the pieces." The loss to Broughton was the first loss for the team since 1999. The Lady Chiefs will travel to take on Walton High School today at 5:45 p.m. The McIntosh boys hosted Fayette County on Friday night and won 2-1 in overtime. The Chiefs scored first with a goal in the third minute of the game. Fayette County buckled down and played great defense for the rest of the half. McIntosh was awarded a penalty kick with four minutes remaining in the half, but missed and entered the half up 1-0. The second half looked very much like the first, but the Tigers were starting to push through the Chiefs stingy defense. The Tigers scored 17 minutes into the second half off of a goal by Nick Wallach. For the remainder of regulation both goalies, Matt Honeywell of Fayette County and Chris Conrad of McIntosh, kept their teams alive with spectacular saves. The McIntosh boys will host the McIntosh Classic this weekend, with games starting on Thursday evening. The Fayette County girls played at Eagle's Landing last night and will host Newnan tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. The Fayette County boys will host Newnan tonight at 7:30 p.m., while Starr's Mill's boys will travel to Walton High Schoo tomorrow for a game at 7:30 p.m. Sandy Creek's boys will host Union Grove on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. |
