Fayette attracting top teachers to job fairs

As the last teacher job fair for recruitment for the 2001-2002 academic year approaches, Fayette County school officials say they are pleased with the number and caliber of candidates that have interviewed for teaching jobs.

One hundred prospective teachers interviewed for various teaching positions at the job fair in March. The number of applicants attending the April 20 fair is expected to top last month's attendance.

"The quality and experience of applicants who are attracted to Fayette County continues to be impressive," said Judy Byrd, human resources director for Fayette County schools. "We were extremely pleased with the number of applicants attending the March job fair and we are looking forward to the April turnout."

Critical need areas continue to be in mathematics, science, special education, middle grades math and middle grades science. The school system is offering a $1,000 signing bonus to help bring qualified teachers into these areas.

Byrd said many veteran teachers from other states who are relocating to the Atlanta area have been attending the job fairs to explore possible employment with the system. Current teachers of the Fayette School System are being offered an incentive to help bring teachers of all levels to the county. Any certified staff member, other than an administrator, who recruits an applicant signing a contract in Fayette County will earn an extra day of personal leave during the 2001-2002 academic year.

Interested individuals who wish to participate in next month's job fair are being asked to submit applications for employment and to call the Human Resources Department at 770-460-3535 by April 18 to schedule interviews.

Additional information about the school system, salary, benefits, test scores and community may be obtained from the Fayette County Board of Education Web site, www.fcboe.org, or by calling the Human Resources Department.
