"Cinderella" comes to the Fox Theatre

Perhaps the most famous dysfunctional family of all is Cinderella's step-family.

Her father is practically nonexistent and her stepmother and sisters use her as if she were a slave. Why, in some versions of the story, the abuse drives Cinderella to bloody revenge on her stepsisters, while other, kinder and gentler versions, have her talking to rodents and birds.

In the Rodgers and Hammerstein version, which is now playing at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, there is no violence and there are no delusions. Cinderella is still hassled by her step-family, but thanks to a Fairy Godmother, played by Eartha Kitt, she gets to go to the ball and fall in love with the Prince.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein version of "Cinderella" was first shown on CBS in 1957 starring Julie Andrews. It was remade in 1965 with Lesley Ann Warren as the girl in the glass slipper. The show was recently remade for "The Wonderful World of Disney," starring Brandy and Whitney Houston.

This small screen classic, filled with timeless characters and irresistible romance, features Jamie Lynn Sigler as Cinderella and Paolo Montalban as The prince. Sigler is best known for her work as Meadow on HBO's "The Sopranos." She has also appeared as Young Mary/Janey in the national tour of "It's A Wonderful Life."

Montalban played The Prince in the Wonderful World of Disney production of "Cinderella" and has also appeared in "The King and I," "Man of La Mancha," and "Kiss Me Kate." He also starred as Kung Lao on the WB action series, "Mortal Kombat Conquest."

Kitt is currently riding a surge in her popularity. Always famous for her role as Catwoman on the television series, "Batman," she will also be recognized by youngsters in the audience as Izma, from Disney's latest animated release, "The Emperor's New Groove."

Kitt is also steeped in Broadway experience. She has been nominated for three Tony awards and has appeared in "Dr. Faust," "Shinbone Alley," "Timbuktu," and "Mrs. Patterson."

"Cinderella" will be performed at 8 p.m. through Saturday and at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. There will also be matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Ticket prices range from $22.50 to $45. Tickets are available at the Fox Theatre box office, online at www.broadwayseries.com and at all Ticketmaster locations.
