Melissa Scheid, a left fielder for the Starr's Mill varsity softball team and a graduating senior, signed a letter of intent to play at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Ga. next year.

Scheid has played on the varsity team for her entire career at Starr's Mill and has been awarded the Panther Award in 1999 and the Best Defensive player award in 2000. The Panther Award goes to the overall most valuable player in all aspects of the game.

Scheid said she will "always look back fondly on the girls and the team relationship."

"She is a quick player and very knowledgable of the game," said Coach Donna Bailey. "She will be an asset to the Georgia Southwestern program."

Scheid chose the school because she felt comfortable with the class size at the school and the attitude. "I really liked the coach and it just felt right," said Scheid.

It was a right fit for the school, too. The Lady Hurricanes will graduate an outfielder with some speed this spring and they need to replace her to continue their search for another conference championship. The team went 42-13 in 2000 and won its third conference championship.
