There were several announcements made during Tuesday night's match between the McIntosh and Fayette County varsity girls soccer match. At one point the loudspeaker announced that the Lady Chiefs were ranked first in the state and first in the nation in the Fox Sports poll. Perhaps the most surprising announcement came after senior forward Julie Herdic scored her first of three goals on the evening. As near as anyone can tell, that goal gave her the most goals in girl's high school soccer for the state of Georgia.

"I did some research," said Coach Stephen Buckner. "There wasn't a set record but the highest career total in the state I found belonged to a student at Tift County High School who had 163 goals in three years."

Herdic now has 166 goals and is 16 goals shy of cracking the national top 10. The number one femal goal scorer in high school history has 180.

As for the macth between the county rivals, Mcintosh won 6-0 but Fayette County gave the Lady Chiefs their toughest game of the season, so far. The Lady Tigers held McIntosh scoreless for over 30 minutes. Geneva Baran scored a goal with just over seven minutes to play in the first half. The Lady Chiefs exploded for five goals in the second half. Herdic netted her hat trick, while aLauren kopec and Alicia Schulz each added one.

"When you get six goals from five assists, you know the team game is working very well," said Buckner. "Fayette County worked hard and stopped a lot of what we trying to do early on."

McIntosh will face Eagle's Landing on Friday for the first time in school history. Next week, they will face Westminster on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and then will travel to North Carolina for a game with the number two team in the nation.

"The girls really enjoy the responsibility of being number one," said Buckner. "We've entered the toughest part of our schedule and we'll see where we fit in."

In the next month, the Lady Chiefs will face six out of state teams; two from North Carolina, one from Alabama, one from Colorado, one from Wisconsin and one from California. They will also face Walton, which tied Starr's Mill on Tuesday night, 2-2.
