show returns for 19th year this weekend

More than 34 different lines of import and domestic vehicles will be under one roof this week when the Georgia World Congress Center hosts the 19th annual Atlanta-Journal Constitution International Auto Show. The Auto Show is the largest automotive event of the year for metro Atlanta area dealers, featuring a variety of styles, including luxury cars, family cars, sports cars, light trucks and four-wheel drive vehicles. "Our show has grown into one of the premiere events of its type in the nation, with over 500 vehicles presented in 650,000 square feet of display area," said Shayne Wilson, president of the Metro Atlanta Automobile Dealers Association, the show's sponsor. The Auto Show is also where concept cars, exotics and 2002 model cars make their debuts. Among the concept cars that will be shown this year are the Nissan Z, the Isuzu Kai and the Chrysler Citadel. Some of the 2002 models include the 2002 Jeep Liberty, the 2002 Infiniti Q45 and the 2002 Lexus SC 430. Show visitors also will see the production debut of the 2003 Dodge Viper. There are many other attractions that will make the Auto Show the place to be this week. Tonight, Atlanta Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal will be on hand from 7-9 p.m. There will also be the Sony Playstation Two Trailer, antique and classic cars, the Batmobile from the first two "Batman" films and the Team Extreme Motorcycle Show, featuring Ray Peters. Team Extreme will give daily performances, March 9-11. Racing enthusiasts will enjoy the Motorsports Pavilion, racing simulators and remote control race cars. NASCAR star Dave Blaney will appear Saturday, March 10 from 4-6 p.m. The show will be 1-9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, March 7 and 8, 1-10 p.m. Friday, March 9, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 10 and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 11. Admission to the auto show is $8 for adults and $4 for children 6-12 years old. Weekday discount coupons are available at Kroger and participating local car dealers.
