Offshoot plans coffeehouse and classes this weekend

The next-to-last Stars on the Southern Crescent of the season, scheduled for Saturday, March 10, at the LaFayette Educational Center in Fayetteville, will mark singer/songwriter Carla Ulbrich's first appearance at the popular south side coffeehouse.

This contemporary folk musician has reaped numerous honors for her songwriting and guitar playing, including first place at the 2000 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, Best Upbeat and Best Overall at the 1999 South Florida Folk Fest Song Competition, first place at the 1998 Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest, and a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission.

She has appeared at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, Borders Books and Music in five states, the Centerfold Cafe in Manhattan, N.Y., and such Atlanta-area venues as Eddie's Attic, the Freight Room and Fiddler's Green.

The coffee house, which is presented by Offshoot Productions, will also host blues musician and songwriter Ray Chesna, who has appeared several times previously at Stars on the Southern Crescent.

The LaFayette Educational Center (formerly, Fayette County High School) is at 205 LaFayette Ave. Doors open at 7:45 p.m. and the show starts at 8:15. Admission is $7 ($5 for senior citizens and children under 12). Patrons who bring their mugs from home are eligible for the "most unusual mug" award and receive discounts on hot beverages.

The menu includes gourmet coffee, herbal tea, cold beverages and home-baked desserts. Proceeds from concession sales benefit Offshoot Productions' apprentice program.

Offshoot Productions will offer "creative dramatics: an acting workshop just for kids" Sunday, March 11 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Peachtree City Library. Geared to children 6 to 8, the workshop introduces youngsters to the "who, what and where" of acting through improvisation and theater games.

Offered during Generation Arts month, the workshop is free. Generation Arts is designed to encourage the young and the young at heart to experience arts and cultural activities. Offshoot Productions, which is a member of the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts, conducts annual free workshops for children as part of this event.

Because of the popularity of the creative dramatics workshop, children must be pre-registered.

Sunday, March 11, Offshoot will offer a three-hour acting workshop focusing on comedy. Open to adults and teens, the workshop features three instructors, each dealing with different aspects of the art of acting comedy.

Acting comedy, which costs $25 and runs from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., will be at the Peachtree City Library, 201 Willowbend Road, at the intersection of Ga. Highway 54. Advance registration is strongly encouraged.
