Sandy Creek High School came up short in the AAAA state basketball tournament last Friday, ending a strong year overall.

It was the second time in school history that the basketball team had made it to the tournament and the first time for the current group of players.

The Patriots' opponent was Dougherty High School and Dougherty got the best of them, winning 83-66. The score does not indicate how close the game was, though. Sandy Creek trailed Dougherty by five points in the fourth quarter, but began to slip when Corey Adams got into foul trouble and the team couldn't break Dougherty's two-three zone.

Adams was the leading scorer for sandy creek, netting 23 points. L.T. Lockett contributed 21 points and William Belton added 16. Bill Crumpler, Richard Lott and Oliver Mcgee played good defense on Dougherty's post players in the second half.

Sandy Creek finished the season 20-9. The team returns 10 players next year and is looking forward to some players moving up from the freshman and junior varsity squads.

"We had a phenomenal year," said Coach Rick Francis. "We expect great things next year, despite having some large shoes to fill with Lockett moving on to college. We're looking for everybody to step up."
