Joint Ash Wednesday service is tonight By SALLIE
SATTERTHWAITE
In preparation for the annual commemoration of the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Christians throughout the world observe 40 days of penitence and reflection in a season called Lent. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, and falls this year on Feb. 28. Among area churches conducting special services are Peachtree City congregations St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church and Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran. The two bodies have joined for this observance since 1984. This year the Lutheran church is host for the gathering. Worship will begin at 7 p.m. at the church on Peachtree Parkway at Ga. Highway 54. The service will include the imposition of ashes representing the believer's mortality, and the celebration of Holy Communion. Lutheran pastor the Rev. John Weber will preach the sermon. Other clergy participating in the service include St. Andrew's rector, the Rev. Dan Brigham, as well as associate rector the Rev. Frank Larisey; and the Rev. Miriam Beecher and vicar Derek Olsen of Christ Our Shepherd. Choirs of both congregations will provide special music under the direction of the Lutherans' choirmaster and organist, David Beecher. A reception in the church's fellowship hall will follow worship. During the service, nursery care will be available for young children. There will also be Ash Wednesday services at St. Andrew's, 316 Peachtree Pkwy. North, at 6 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and at noon at Christ Our Shepherd. These services too include the imposition of ashes and the celebration of Communion. The community is invited to these worship services, Weber said.
