Slowing growth, tax equity should be top PTC priorities

I read with great interest Fred Wellman's letter about "one of PTC's crazies wants to change status quo leadership" and thought I would add a few comments of my own.

1. Slow the growth! Enough is enough. What person in their right mind can say that all these new stores opening won't cause big-time traffic problems. With these new mega stores opening you hear people say it creates jobs but what you don't hear is it causes people to lose their livelihoods. How can the small business compete when they will sell things under cost until the competition is gone? It is sad but a lot of the family-owned places will be closed a year from now.

The funny thing is when donations are needed for the local schools, churches, civic organizations, etc., these are the first people to open their hearts and donate items for all these worthy fund-raisers.

2. If the newsletter that came out in PTC is true about taxes and the city is paying about $3 million in taxes that it should not be doing, then I think this would be my top priority. How can this still be going on for four years? $10 million to $12 million will buy a lot. Let's see what millions can buy.

How about a small jail so we don't have to pay the county?

How about expanding the current recreation center? I don't think Mayor Lenox has been over to see just how much it is used.

How about fixing the cart paths? Some of them are getting pretty dangerous, and while we are fixing them maybe put a few speed bumps on them to slow the golf carts down on steep hills. It is only a matter of time before we are reading, "Walker killed by speeding out-of-control golf cart."

An art center, senior center and an organized teen center are all fine ideas but let's take a survey and see if this is what the people want. Let's not spend big bucks to conduct the survey. Do it online and place the survey in the paper and ask people to vote for their ideas. After all it is their money.

3. Trash. I just can't believe how much people in this well-educated town litter. Fine 'em, you bet. Better yet, make them pick it up a few hours every week. Maybe next time they will think twice.

4. People of PTC, wake up. The names being mentioned for mayor and city council seats are the very ones that have let things get even more out of hand. Is this what you all want?
