annual Flower Show returns to Atlanta By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Auguste Rodin once said, "The artist is the confidant of nature. Flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms, every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards them." That quote may be one of the inspriations of the 2001 Southeastern Flower Show which starts today at the Atlanta Exposition Center. This is the 14th year of the annual garden extravaganza and the second year in its new home. "Writers have been inspired through the ages by gardens and flowers," said 2001 Show Chairman Sharon Flores. "The show will celebrate the writer's inspirations with "Gardens of Poetry and Prose." This year's featured competitions will be "Flowers of Literature" in the Artisitc Floral Design Division, "Gardens of the Authors" in the Education Division, "Shakespeare's garden" in the Garden Design Division, "A Library of Plants" in the Horticulture Division, "A Child's Garden of Verses" in the junior division, "Gardens of American Literature" in the Landscape Division, and "Greek Mythology in Flowers" in the Professional Division. Other features of the event will include over 60 educational speakers, hands-on demonstrations and workshops, a marketplace highlighting 90 gardening boutiques and shops a bookstore featuring an extensive collection fo flower and gardening literature, beautiful music from the pavilion in the entrabce garden, and regional artists painting in the Landsape Divisions garden. At extra costs there will be an early morning tours which give people a behind the scene tour of the show. This is only offered from 8-9:30 a.m. by advance registration at a cost of $35 per person. Tea at the Flower Show is offered at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at a cost of $25 per person plus show admission. Make and Take Workshops will be offerd at 10 a.m, and 1:30 p.m. during the run of the sho. These "hands-on" classes create fresh floral and plant designs to take home. The cost of the class is $40 by advance registration plus the show admission. Family Frolic will be offered Friday from 5:30-8:30 p.m. There will be hand-on activities, floral arranging, storytlling, a puppet factory station presented by The Center For Puppetry Arts, Kroger Cooking Camp and a chance to have pictures taken with The Powerpuff Girls. Southern Gardeners' Night will be held Saturday from 6-8:30 p.m. It will be an informal gathering with food, spirits and regional experts on hand to discuss your Southern gardening challenges. The awards ceremony will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The 2001 Southeastern Flower Show will be held Wednesday-Sunday, Feb. 21-25. The hours are from 9:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9:30 a.m.-6 pm. Sunday.
