Soccer season begins with jamborees

Just as the winter season of high school athletics winds down, the spring season begins. The local high school soccer teams will play in jamborees this weekend and will begin their season next week.

McIntosh is sending its boys and girls teams off to face some stiff competition in exhibition soccer. The boys team will travel to Pope High School on Saturday, while the girls will travel to McEachern. McIntosh will start the season at home on Tuesday, Feb. 20, as the take on North Clayton. The girls will play at 5:30 p.m., while the boys will play at 7:30 p.m.

The season gets started this weekend for Newnan's girls team at Drake Stadium in Newnan as the Lady Cougar soccer team hosts metro schools, including two 2000 state playoff contenders, in the second annual Lady Cougar Jamboree. The day kicks off at noon with Newnan taking on Lakeside, Atlanta from Area 7-AAAAA. Wheeler and Norcross follow with Newnan returning to the field to take on the 8-AAAAA representative Norcross at 1:15. The day ends with Newnan and Area 6-AAAAA Wheeler at 3:05.

Northgate's boys and girls will play in a jamboree this Saturday at Henry County. The boys will start their season on Tuesday as they take on Carrollton High School at 7 p.m. The girls season begins on Friday, Feb. 23, as they host Upson-Lee at 7 p.m.
