Season ends for most local teams in region tournament By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The regular season of basketball ended last weekend and on Monday a much harsher season began, the postseason. As long as you keep winning, you keep playing, but when you lose, the season is over. For most of the Fayette County teams the postseason ended with a loss in the first round, but several teams survive and in the case of the Sandy Creek's boys, they haven't played yet. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs played Lovejoy on Tuesday night and lost 49-32. Lovejoy was scheduled to play the Starr's Mill Lady Panthers yesterday at Fayette County High School at 4 p.m. Starr's Mill advanced to the second round by defeating Stockbridge on Tuesday evening 53-44. Alison Horne led the team in scoring with 13 points. East Coweta's girls also advanced to the second round of the region tournament by defeating Fayette County on Tuesday night, 52-48. The Lady Indians led 14-7 after the first quarter and built a 19-11 lead in the second quarter before the Lady Tigers went on a 16-0 run. Entering the fourth quarter, Fayette County led 41-38 but East Coweta was able to salvage the win. They will face Morrow at Fayette County High School today at 5:30 p.m. The winners in the second round games will qualify for the state tournament and advance to the semifinals starting tonight. In other action, McIntosh's boys lost to Riverdale 74-62, despite a blistering peformance from Josh Burr, who scored 31 points. Sandy Creek's girls team lost to Woodward Academy on Tuesday night 59-40. They wee led in scoring by Tiffany Paschal who finished with 14 points. Sandy Creek's boys met Woodward Academy at 4 p.m. at Union Grove High School. |
